The BC SPCA was established over 120 years ago and we continue to grow stronger every year. We are a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. Today we have 44 locations throughout BC that provide a wide range of services and programs to help more than 45,000 animals in distress and need each year.

Our Vancouver Animal Hospital is currently recruiting for an Associate Veterinarian to join their team in a collaborative environment  where medicine and pets come first. You will deliver the highest level of veterinary care to every pet in a professional & ethical manner while ensuring that the client & their pet have an exceptional experience. You will establish trust & gain the confidence & compliance of clients through effectively delivering appropriate preventive care, performing complete diagnostic workups, developing thorough treatment plans, communicating home care instructions, & planning follow‐up.

We use low stress handling techniques & are working towards Fear Free Accreditation. You are confident in routine surgery & client communication. You are very personable & work well efficiently in a team. You have knowledge in basic dentistry & have excellent medical records keeping skills. Regular weekend hours are required, but no on-call or overnight shifts will be required. We offer a competitive salary, CE allowance & health/medical benefits. Mentorship opportunity exists for the right new graduate.

Required knowledge, skills & abilities to succeed in this position:

  • Valid & in good standing licensed veterinarian within the provincial of BC

  • Knowledge of principles, theories & practices of veterinary medicine & science

  • Knowledge of the procedures used for receiving, treating, & scheduling patients, for ordering medical supplies, & requesting laboratory tests

  • Ability to read & interpret documents, including provincial veterinary regulations, operating & maintenance instructions, & procedure manuals, medical texts

  • Ability to write reports & correspondences

  • Knowledge of the use, care, & storage of veterinary instruments, materials, & equipment including sterilization techniques for various instruments & materials

  • Biology – Knowledge of plant & animal organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, interdependencies, & interactions with each other & the environment

  • Medicine & Dentistry — Knowledge of the information & techniques needed to diagnose & treat injuries, diseases, & deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties & interactions, & preventive health-care measures

  • Chemistry — Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, & properties of substances & of the chemical processes & transformations that they undergo.  This includes uses of chemicals & their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, & disposal methods

  • Sales & Marketing — Knowledge of principles & methods for showing, promoting, & selling products or services.  This includes marketing strategy & tactics, product demonstration, sales techniques, & sales control systems

  • Excellent written & oral communication skills, respect of confidentiality

  • The ideal candidate will also possess basic bookkeeping skills, excellent computer ability including spreadsheet preparation & production analysis

  • Motivated & confident, with great verbal & presentation skills

  • attention to detail & the flexibility to work with changing priorities under pressure

  • must possess strong organizational & time management skills, independent judgment

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment independently or in a team

  • Analytical & a creative problem solver

  • Resourceful & has ability to develop relationships with others

  • Ability to travel & work flexible hours when required
