The BC SPCA was established over 120 years ago and we continue to grow stronger every year. We are a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. Today we have 44 locations throughout BC that provide a wide range of services and programs to help more than 45,000 animals in distress and need each year.

We are currently recruiting for a Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) interested in shelter medicine for our Vancouver Animal Hospital. This is an auxiliary position for vacation and sick time relief. The role of a shelter Animal Health Technician is challenging and can be incredibly rewarding. You must be a self-starter, organized and dedicated to improving the lives of less fortunate animals.

You will use your professional training in animal husbandry, in the care and treatment of sick/injured animals. There will also be learning opportunities to greatly expand your knowledge of behaviour and welfare. You are also familiar with working in a union environment. Knowledge, skills and abilities to be successful in this role:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Completion of CVMA accredited Animal Health Technician/Veterinary Technician program

  • Minimum of 2 years related work experience

  • A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics and common diseases

  • Experience handling dogs & cats in a professional setting an asset

  • Position is physically demanding and includes heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties

  • Strong computer skills (i.e. MS Office Suite) sufficient to deal effectively with the responsibilities and functions of the position

  • Must possess excellent verbal, written and organizational skills

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task

  • Demonstrated excellent telephone and customer service skills

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt easily to situations at hand

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Familiar working in a union environment

  • Philosophical harmony with BC SPCA policies, programs and protocols

  • Must be flexible and able to work weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays
