We are now recruiting for Summer Camps Job Opportunities

The BC SPCA summer camps for kids are held at various locations throughout BC.  Our week long camps are designed to teach kids aged 6-14 about pet care, animal welfare, nature and the environment. Spend your summer helping to make a difference by creating a stimulating, fun and positive atmosphere for campers. We are currently recruiting to fill summer camp counsellor positions at the following camp locations:

  • Vancouver

  • West Vancouver

  • Richmond

  • Surrey

  • Port Coquitlam

  • Maple Ridge/Abbotsford

Qualifications and Other Job Requirements:

  • Excellent leadership skills

  • Demonstrated experience in team-work with a teachable spirit

  • Energetic and enthusiastic

  • Patient, positive and hardworking

  • Ability to communicate and resolve conflict in a constructive and professional manner

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent organizational, time and general management skills

  • Valid First Aid Certificate is a requirement

  • Must be willing to complete a criminal record check

  • Applicants willing to work in more than one location are preferred

  • Applicants with a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are preferred

  • Previous experience with kids or animals is an asset

 Other Job requirements:

 These positions may be funded by Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program. Applicants would be required to meet CSJ criteria including:

 must be between 15-30 years of age

  • must have been registered in full time studies during the previous academic year

  • must intend on returning to school after the summer

  • legally entitled to work in Canada

 

Job Descriptions:

Senior Camp Counsellor

1 position at each location: West Vancouver, Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge/Abbotsford – 9 weeks, beginning June 23rd    

A senior camp counsellor will lead the team of counsellors at each camp location. In smaller camp locations the Senior Counsellor may also lead a group of campers.

Responsibilities Include and may not be limited to:

  • working with the regional coordinator to schedule activities

  • working with counsellors on a weekly basis to adapt/update activity schedules

  • dealing with camper behavior issues

  • leading and overseeing camp counsellors

  • overseeing group activities and presentations

  • supervising and coordinating volunteers

  • keeping track of supplies

  • assisting the camp supervisor in evaluating staff

  • ensuring a safe and secure camp environment

  • evaluating the effectiveness of activities and suggesting improvements 

  • greeting parents and signing campers in / out

  • addressing parental questions / concerns

  • communicating with shelter staff / management

  • gaining a basic understanding of BC SPCA policies and positions on animal welfare issues

  • gaining a basic understanding of animal stress signals and monitoring shelter animals for signs of stress when interacting with campers

  • maintaining a clean and organized activity space

  • leading a camp group at times

*Richmond and Port Coquitlam positions may have 1-2 weeks of branch duties (various tasks including outreach education)

 Camp Counsellor

 3 positions at each location: Vancouver, Surrey, West Vancouver-9 weeks, beginning June 23rd 

2 positions: Maple Ridge/Abbotsford - 9 weeks, beginning June 23rd 

1 position at each location: Richmond, Port Coquitlam - 9 weeks, beginning June 23rd 

Camp counsellors will lead a group of eight campers aged 6-14 and will present age appropriate activities.

Responsibilities include:

  • leading and presenting activities

  • ensuring the safety of campers

  • providing a fun and inclusive environment

  • taking attendance and keeping track of campers at all times

  • providing first aid as required

  • communicating with senior staff to evaluate and improve the camp

  • gaining a basic understanding of animal stress signals and monitoring shelter animals for signs of stress when interacting with campers

  • maintaining a clean and organized activity space

  • liaising with parents to deal with any camper issues

  • Other duties as may be required

*Richmond and Port Coquitlam positions may have 1-2 weeks of branch duties (various tasks including outreach education).
