The BC SPCA was established over 120 years ago and we continue to grow stronger every year. We are a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. Today we have 44 locations throughout BC that provide a wide range of services and programs to help more than 45,000 animals in distress and need each year.

We are currently recruiting for a Veterinary Assistant interested in shelter medicine for our hospital in Vancouver. This is an auxiliary position for vacation and sick time relief. You will provide exceptional customer service as you assist clients with their questions and scheduling appointments, either in person or on the telephone, in a courteous and professional manner. You are adaptable, positive and have a true passion for animals and animal care experience in a professional setting.

You will assist in helping to maintain health care to all animals in the branch as directed and in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures. You are a self-starter, organized and dedicated to improving the lives of less fortunate animals. There will also be learning opportunities to greatly expand your knowledge of behaviour and welfare. Knowledge, skills and abilities to be successful in this role:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Completion of Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Office Assistant Program

  • Minimum of two years related work experience

  • A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics and common diseases

  • Experience handling dogs & cats in a professional setting an asset

  • Excellent verbal and written skills

  • Excellent organizational skills coupled with the ability to prioritize and multi-task

  • Demonstrated excellent telephone and customer service skills

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt easily to situations at hand

  • Strong computer skills sufficient to deal effectively with the responsibilities and functions of the position

  • Be a team player always willing and enthusiastic in supporting the other members to get the job done

  • Position is physically demanding and includes heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Philosophical harmony with BC SPCA policies, programs and protocols

  • Must be flexible and able to work weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays
