We are a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia. Today we have 44 locations throughout BC that provide a wide range of services and programs to help more than 45,000 animals in distress and need each year.

The BCSPCA Spay/Neuter Clinic is recruiting to fill a veterinary assistant summer student position. This position is a 9-week full time position starting in June and ending in August. This position will provide support to the entire clinic team in all aspects of client and patient care as well as maintaining the clinic in a clean, efficient working order.

Qualifications & Other Job Requirements:

  • Experience handling dogs and cats in a professional setting

  • Energetic & enthusiastic; team player

  • Patient, positive & hardworking

  • Previous experience with animals is an asset Position is physically demanding and includes heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill the required duties

  • Strong computer skills (i.e. MS Office Suite) sufficient to deal effectively with the responsibilities and functions of the position

  • Must possess excellent verbal, written and organizational skills

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task

  • Demonstrated excellent telephone and customer service skills

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt easily to situations at hand

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Other Job requirements:

The HRSDC Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program may fund these positions. Applicants are required to meet CSJ criteria including:

  • must be between 15-30 years of age

  • must have been registered in full time studies during the previous academic year

  • must intend on returning to school after the summer


Job Descriptions:

Veterinary Assistant Student

The duties of this position are highly varied dependent upon clinic needs and the skill set of the employee. They include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting with patient check- in, examination and discharge

  • Preparing surgical and treatment rooms for the day's patients

  • Preparing patients for surgery, including shaving, microchipping, nail trims, etc.

  • Cleaning surgical instruments and preparing surgical packs

  • Assisting with general patient care including patient restraint and minor medical treatments

  • Unpacking supply orders and re-stocking supplies throughout the clinic

  • General cleaning duties including doing laundry, washing/wiping down countertops, sweeping & mopping floors, cleaning kennels, cleaning and disinfecting surgery, etc.

  • Various reception duties including answering telephones, booking appointments, filing, invoicing, etc.
