THE BRITISH COLUMBIA SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
Our mission: To protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in B.C.
To assist the society in achieving its goals it is critical that Community Councils throughout the province are actively involved. While the BC SPCA's Board of Directors has overall responsibility for the governance and decision-making of the society, the Community Council's input to local, regional and society plans and programs is vital to our ongoing success.
Roles and regulations
The following outlines the duties and requirements of BC SPCA branch community councils.
Community Councils (CC's) are elected at the Branch AGM (Annual General Meetings), which should be held each year no later than March 31.
Detailed job descriptions have been prepared for CC portfolios. Branches are not required to have every portfolio described in the document on their CC, but are encouraged to determine which of the portfolios are required to best meet their local needs.
The CC Chair should create a Nominating Committee (three to five people) to generate nominations (see nomination form below). A Community Council should consist of not less than three or more than 10 members in good standing with the BC SPCA.
Nominations can be accepted up until seven days before the AGM, but may be accepted from the floor to fill a vacancy.
If the number of candidates exceeds the positions available on the Community Council, an election should be held at the branch AGM to determine the successful candidates.
The Community Council should give consideration to having a retreat/planning session as soon as possible after the AGM to clarify responsibilities, priorities, meeting protocols, etc.
The Community Council Chair represents the branch on the Regional Council.
