Role:
To walk shelter dogs while handling them in an appropriate and safe way as set out by the SPCA in the Orientation and Training sessions.
Responsibilities:
Interact with dogs, volunteers, and staff in a respectful and empowering manner.
Walk dogs safely within the parameters defined by the SPCA Shelter. Encourage positive adoptable behaviours and basic leash skills.
Participate in skill development workshops as required
Follow correct protocol for reporting animal behaviour and health
Consult and debrief with senior dog walking volunteers and SPCA staff regarding challenging dogs and behaviours.
Min. Time Commitment:
1 ½ hour orientation/shelter tour.
2 hours of basic workshop training
1 hour buddy training
1 set shift of 2 hrs dog walking per week, six month minimum commitment
Min. Requirements/Qualifications:
Proficiency speaking English (be able to follow verbal/written direction)
Physically fit and relatively strong (most dogs are med to large size and full of energy)
Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age or older (children 10 – 16 years old are welcome to join in with their parents or caregivers)
All volunteers require Photo Identification .
Supervision:
Dog coordinators on duty evenings and weekends
Staff on duty mornings
Volunteers must be comfortable walking independently
