A Vancouver Island boy by birth, Jamie moved to Vancouver to attend UBC, Department of Animal Science, graduating in 1975. Veterinary medicine was his chosen path and led him to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1980. The first three years were spent between working as an associate veterinarian in a busy small animal practice and the Federal Government’s Meat Hygiene Department. For the next fourteen years Jamie owned and worked at a practice in Richmond.
Feeling a need to give back to the less fortunate animals of his community, Jamie accepted a position in 1997 with the BC SPCA and is now our Chief Animal Health Officer. His responsibilities include: overseeing the health of the animals in our 36 shelters; overseeing the full service hospital in Vancouver and two spay neuter clinics (Kamloops and Prince George); developing programs involving spay/neuter, First Nations, outreach initiatives (e.g. Charlie’s Foodbank, free vet clinics); Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Days; National Examining Board Mentorship for Foreign Graduate Veterinarians; and the ever popular program for senior veterinary students from North American colleges – a two week Animal Welfare Externship for graduation credit. The goal of the program is to expose future veterinarians to the challenges humane societies face and invite them to become part of the solution.
Jamie resides in Vancouver as a guest of his cat “Mr. Biz” who adopted him on one of Jamie's many visits to the shelters.
