Local news

Mika was picked up by the local animal control when she was found wandering the streets. She was brought to the BC SPCA Alberni-Clayoquot Branch in hopes her owners would come looking for her. When no one came calling or looking Mika was made available for adoption.

Staff could tell she hasn’t been on the streets for very long as her coat and body were still in great condition, but whoever had her previously had not spent any time training her on what proper doggy manners are. Mika would need a dog experienced home and someone that was willing to put the time and effort into her training starting with the basics.

A few weeks after being up for adoption, Mika found someone who was ready for a challenge and found her to be a beautiful young dog. Close to a year has passed and her new mum has taken some time to write us about Mika’s progress.

I adopted my dog, Mica, last fall. I believe it was in October but it may have been September. It was from the Port Alberni SPCA branch, and they would probably remember, Mica was a bit of a challenging dog.

Mica was difficult with other dogs, being fairly aggressive and VERY bouncy. She is a border collie/boxer cross, which I discovered a few months after I adopted her.

She adapted to my home quickly, getting along perfectly with all of my cats as well as my small Chihuahua. She is great with other dogs, as long as I ensure that they meet each other safely and properly.

I discovered her heritage one day when she was in the yard with me while I was gardening. A young man walked by, and recognized her. This boy told me about when she was a puppy and it was really nice to learn these details.

She still loves to roam, but I have a secure fence and we are working on her recall every day. We walk off leash at my friend's fenced farm and Mica is getting way better with coming to 'check-in' with us when we are walking. She is learning that I am the person she looks up to and she is not quite as independent as she was at first.

I've had Mica for almost a year and she will be with me for the rest of her life.

What a difference in Mica’s life, we’re so glad she has settled in nicely and is enjoying her days at home. Thank you to her new mum for making adoption your first option and for giving this sweet young girl a second chance at life, it’s well deserved.
