Local news

A concerned citizen called in on multiple occasions to report a dog being without their Five Freedoms, that dog was Maggie. She had been left in a yard tied by a chain with no food, water, or shelter many times and she was finally surrendered to an animal protection officer. Maggie came to the BC SPCA Chilliwack Branch in December 2011 so that staff and volunteers could help rehabilitate her.

With a pretty high temperature and skin issues Maggie was in serious need of some medical attention which she received immediately upon intake. To be safe she had blood work done and sent into a local veterinarian for testing too. Thankfully her healthier regimen of a quality diet, fresh water, shelter, and nurturing paid off and Maggie was looking better every day.

Despite Maggie’s upbringing she was still a lovely dog who wanted nothing more than to be treated with the respect she deserved. While very smart and active Maggie was also very fearful of new situations and would require a kind and gentle owner to help introduce her to new situations without her feeling threatened. Maggie met those owners in Gregg and Sarah who she now spends her days with happy as can be. They wrote us to share an update and photos:

New Year's Dog. We met Maggie on December 31st, 2011. Seemed like a very sweet dog. So, we came back to adopt her on January 1, 2012. We brought her home to her new life in the Kootenays.

She'd spent the first two years of her life chained in the driveway behind a restaurant and thrown scraps for food. Now, she gets to go for walks everyday along the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers, play with other dogs, and is even winning the hearts of our three cats!

She is a beautiful, sweet dog. We are so very happy to have adopted her. She is a great cuddler! Already, Maggie has taught us so much about love and resilience.

Everyone couldn’t be happier to know that Maggie has settled in so well with her family and has really come leaps and bounds since being surrendered. We wish Gregg, Sarah, the cats, and Maggie a fantastic life together. Thank you so much for making adoption your first option.
