Local news

Minnie and her siblings were born in the wild to their feral mother who seemed to keep having litters, but constantly eluded animal control officers trying to find her. Special provincial constables had been made aware of this situation by local residents who kept spotting them. It took a bit of time but constables were finally able to round up all the puppies and bring them into the BC SPCA Kamloops Branch to help rehabilitate them and make sure they were healthy.

Minnie went into foster care to receive some rehabilitation and learn what living in a home environment was all about. She had only been outdoors in the wild and it was an enormous adjustment, but soon Minnie realized all the wonderful aspects of living with a family indoors. All of this helped her grow accustomed to people, affection, proper animal interactions, and many other day-to-day activities. Staff and volunteers saw a huge change in Minnie, she was always a very intelligent dog given her breeding, but this change amplified how great she was.

In December 2011 Minnie was adopted into a home, but unfortunately it didn’t work out. She was brought back to the Kamloops Branch a short while later as things were just not going as well as hoped at home. Being a husky and border collie cross she was bound to have endless amounts of energy at times and prove to be a bit on the stubborn side. Minnie went back into foster care for some more rehabilitation to work on a few more issues that presented themselves when adopted out. Staff and volunteers were more than happy to put in the time and effort into Minnie’s care as it was clear she would find the perfect home when the time was right.

Finally, in mid-January 2012, Minnie stole the heart of a young woman who couldn’t have been a better match for her. Although Minnie is more than happy to curl up on her bed, Minnie is very true to her breeding and loves to be outdoors; Minnie will always be a true snow lover.

Everyone at the Kamloops Branch is excited to see how Minnie is excelling in her new home and all feel gratitude to have had the opportunity to turn Minnie’s life around and help such a sweet girl find her fur-ever home.
