Local news

Simon was picked up and brought to the BC SPCA Maple Ridge Branch when he was found walking the streets with no one around. Staff found Simon’s identification and started calling his owner, but they no longer wished to be a part of their cat’s life. Oddly, one of his pieces of identification was his own name tattooed inside his ear.

Shortly after his arrival, it was discovered that Simon had a few allergies that needed to be addressed to help him become the happiest, healthiest, senior cat he could be. It took a bit of time, but with the right diet he was much better.

Simon was in need of a home with a calm, loving atmosphere, so he could relax and be appreciated for being a senior. A great couple came by one day that weren’t necessarily looking for another addition to their family, but upon meeting Simon, were smitten. It can be hard to interest adopters in senior animals; they tend to be overlooked for much younger cats and kittens. Thankfully this family was exactly what Simon was looking for and he would be able to keep their cat, Freddie, company. His new family wrote in to share their excitement in adopting such a wonderful cat.

We adopted Simon from the BC SPCA Maple Ridge Branch on November 18, 2011. We had lost our seventeen year old cat Lucy to cancer in September 2011 and both ourselves and other cat Freddie were missing her presence in the home. Freddie began walking around the house crying, which made us feel even sadder as she clearly missed the friend she had known her entire life.

After a couple of months had passed, we decided to just visit a shelter and see what it felt like to be around other cats, but were not planning to adopt. On the first visit to the Maple Ridge Branch, they introduced Simon, a beautiful nine year-old male who had been waiting for a new home for several months. Simon had been neglected in his former home and Michelle and the other people at Maple Ridge were doing a great job in getting him healthy, but prospective ‘parents’ seemed to always change their mind when they found out his age.

We fell in love with him right away and brought him home as soon as we could. He has brightened our lives in so many ways in the days and weeks since and now it feels like he has been part of the family forever. He and Freddie get along well and best of all, she hasn’t cried since we introduced them! Simon is the most affectionate and playful cat we have ever known. He especially likes to be carried like a baby, lying on his back and purring contentedly!

Thanks again to Michelle and the other great people at Maple Ridge for helping us find Simon!

It’s wonderful to hear how much Simon has enriched not only this family’s life, but Freddie’s as well. It must have been heartbreaking to hear Freddie’s cries and we are so happy to know that Simon was able to help. Thank you so much for making adoption your first option and for giving this bright-eyed senior a wonderful second chance at a great life.
