Meeko was picked up by an animal control officer in Port Coquitlam in March 2008 when he had wandered into a stranger’s home and wasn’t welcome there. He was then brought to the BC SPCA Coquitlam Branch when it was still open on Pipeline Road (this branch is now closed).
Meeko had no forms of identification to help us find the home he had wandered away from initially, so he was held for a period of time in hopes that those looking after him would come looking. Unfortunately Meeko’s caregivers never came for him and he was placed up for adoption so that he could find a family that wanted to look after him for life.
Meeko was such a friendly, lovable cat that it is still hard to believe that it took over two months for him to find a home that was a perfect match for him. He was always friendly with the other cats in his communal area, was constantly playing with a variety of toys to entertain himself, and he especially enjoyed the attention he garnered when a volunteer or staff member would come into the room.
Finally one day a very special woman came in to meet Meeko; she had seen him online and thought he was just right for her and her other kitty family. It’s now been almost four years and Meeko, now Mr. Bean, is thriving in his home and enjoying every day of his wonderful new life.
Dear SPCA staff and volunteers,
I adopted Mr. Bean (formerly Meeko) from the Coquitlam shelter on May 24, 2008 when he was two years old. At the time, I was looking for a new feline companion for myself and my senior tabby Bertha. After finding out the Coquitlam shelter was closing, I browsed the list of available cats there on the SPCA website and thought 'Meeko' would be a good fit for us ladies.
Within seconds of meeting him, I knew he was the perfect cat for my home. He started chatting with me through his cat cage and tried to get me to play with him, then protested loudly when I left to talk to the SPCA officer about adopting him.
Once we got home, he immediately ran out of his cat crate to greet his new big sister and explore. Within hours, he had picked out his favourite spot on the bed and favourite spot to birdwatch. Within days he and Bertha would curl up on the couch and groom each other, or they'd play tag or nap together. My brother and I decided to re-name him Mr. Bean because of his silly antics.
The feline Mr. Bean is very easy-going, affectionate, happy and a big bundle of fun! His favourite toys are his laser pointer and boxes from Costco. Other than napping, birdwatching and playing with catnip, he enjoys talking to people.
I had read that snowshoe cats were bright, but I didn't expect for Mr. Bean to play fetch (he loves milkcaps and hoards them, as one indicated in one picture), open bedroom doors or figure out how to open the kitchen cupboards. Often he sits on my lap as I work on the computer or read in bed. Or, he'll go on the computer and paw at the keyboard and then try to catch the cursor on the screen. He cheers me up when I've had a bad day and always greets me when I walk in the front door, then follows me around the home.
I'm so glad I decided to make the trek out to the Coquitlam shelter that day. Thank you so much to the staff and volunteers at the old shelter for looking after Mr. Bean as he is much loved and wonderful addition to the family!
Regards, Jocelyn
What a wonderful person Jocelyn is, not only did she adopt Mr. Bean from the BC SPCA, but two others as well. It’s heartwarming to know there are fantastic people like her out there looking after animals who others chose not to. Thank you so much Jocelyn for making the dreams of not one, but three cats come true; adoption truly is her first option.
