Local news

Near the end of 2010, volunteers at the BC SPCA Powell River branch were contacted by a local man named Lea Asher. He had seen Buddy, a little Shih Tzu cross posted online for adoption at the BC SPCA North Peace Branch in Fort St. John. The moment Lea saw Buddy’s picture online, he felt a connection and fell instantly in love.

Lea inquired if Buddy could be transferred to the Powell River branch so he could adopt him as a play mate for his other Shih Tzu cross, Miss Daisy.

Due to the time of year, weather & distance, it seemed almost impossible for the volunteer-run branch to fulfill Lea's request.

But undeterred, volunteer Branch Manager Audrey Hill persevered with a commitment to bring this family-to-be together.

Lea waited patiently for more than two months. Finally, thanks to a dedicated team of staff from BC SPCA branches in Powell River, North Peace, Prince George as well as Drives for Lives volunteer, Randi Dewhirst from 100 Mile House,  little Buddy made a long road trip and arrived in Chilliwack. From there, Lea’s friend drove Buddy another 90 kilometers, through a snowstorm, to the Vancouver Airport where Pacific Coastal flew Buddy on the last leg of his huge journey into the loving arms of his new guardian Lea.

Sincere thanks goes to Pacific Coastal who continues to provide the generous support needed to help our furry friends find their forever homes.

Despite the odds, this is a truly happy beginning for Buddy and his new family in Powell River.

The moral of the story is that there's a happy ending waiting for all our furry friends thanks to the hard work of staff and volunteers who will pull out all stops to secure their adoption into a loving new home.
