Charlie was born with seven siblings while in foster care under the supervision of the BC SPCA Quesnel & District Branch in March 2006. A beautiful mix of Whippet and German shepherd, these puppies could melt even the Grinch’s heart.
All eight puppies stayed in a wonderful home environment being doted on not only by their mother, but by their foster family as well. When Charlie reached an appropriate age he was made available for adoption.
A family who had just experienced a loss found Charlie to be just the puppy they were looking for, or so they thought. They brought Charlie into their home and soon made the choice to have him as a permanent part of their growing brood.
Since adopting over six years ago they have sent us an update on how he’s been doing.
We adopted Charlie shortly after the loss of another SPCA adoptee, Shadow, that we were lucky enough to live with and love for twelve years. Charlie was one of eight puppies; his mother was a whippet and his dad a Shepherd cross.
He was supposed to be a mid-sized dog; we already had another large Shepherd at home (yet another rescue) and thought a smaller dog might be nice. Ha- were we ever in for a surprise!
When I chose him from the litter, the SPCA worker warned me that they felt he might have emotional issues- I wondered how on earth they could know this when he was only eight weeks old? Well, they were right; he's always been a nervous pup with anxiety issues, to the extent that he is now on anxiety medication for dogs.
But he is the joy of my life and everyone in my family dotes on him. He gets plenty of exercise to help with his anxiety, and I've learned that a good massage or two a day really alleviates his nerves too, we call it 'getting out the grumblies'. :)
When we're out walking he always gets complimented on what a beautiful boy he is, and he really is. We are a very relaxed household and I think that helped him settle in well.
And that mid-size dog- well he's taller than your average fully grown German Shepherd and while he is thin, he still weighs in at a very healthy 115lbs.
Charlie is our 6th adoptee, four over the last twenty years from the SPCA and the other two strays who meandered into our lives and simply never left. :) He lives happily with two cats and four humans at present.
We couldn’t be happier to receive such a fantastic update from Charlie’s family. Although it’s been years since he has been in our care, he touched many hearts along the way and we cannot thank his adoptive family enough for continuing to choose adoption as their first option.
