Powder

Adopted: April 25, 2010

To all the wonderful staff at the Sunshine Coast SPCA,

Sorry for the delay sending this update, I have been waiting for the photos we have taken to be downloaded from our camera.  We will not send all 100, but thought you would like to see a few recent photos of Powder in her new home in Vancouver.  We have renamed her ZuZu from the little girl in the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life" that is my husband's favourite holiday movie.  We hope that she will now have a wonderful life with us!

One of the photos was from her first week during an early walk one day with my husband, Paul in our neighbourhood. The other is in her bed, when she sleeps in it, but she seems just as happy on the bare floor or on rugs on the floor!  Finally, last night we had a sleepover with the other Golden Doodle we sometimes babysit, Harvey and that went very well. So now we know for the future, we can have other friends over for her, occasionally.

The vet said she is in great health, and we had a trainer meet her two days after she came home who helped us with her.  We tried her in an obedience class within the first two weeks, but while she was fine with the other puppy, she was not interested in learning, so we will try again in July. Within the first two weeks, she stopped being scared of other dogs and happily socializes now and plays with other dogs of all sizes, but prefers small dogs, especially chihuahuas! :-) She has also started running after balls and sometimes brings them back. She is slowly learning how to sit, but is very good at giving her paw for a treat - sitting or standing. She had her first bath a couple of weeks after we brought her home too, and she was very good, but does not like the hair dryer, so we have to towel dry her which she seems to like. She was very good the first week when we gave her a light grooming so she could see better, and tidied up her paws and tail. She is eating regularly and after 3 weeks has not had an accident inside, and is doing her business on a relatively regular schedule and eating well, twice a day, plus treats in moderation.

She responds well to her new name and her self esteem improved in the first couple of days. After being nervous the first week, she now loves to meet new people as well - she is a hit at the dog park and with young children and very gentle and docile with them.  She sniffs around outside  and walks nicely on leash by our side without pulling (which she did not do before). She is not too keen on car trips, but when she is better in the car, we look forward to bringing her back to see her SPCA family for a visit.  She has been to visit Paul's office as well, and was fine there.  When the weather warms up, we are going to see if she likes swimming as well. We are still building up her stamina as she becomes tired after 45 minutes of walking and playing at least 3 times per day, but we look forward to taking her out for runs and hikes when she has built up more muscle. She still likes to play with her puppet that she had at the SPCA as well - it is her favourite toy, and her second favourite is her Kong, especially when she has to get the treats out!

Thanks again for all your help taking care of her until she came into our lives!

Tail wags from Rachel, Paul and ZuZu!
