Local news

Kismet was found abandoned in his home; his owner had left him there badly matted and hungry for food. He was brought into the care of the BC SPCA Chilliwack Branch on June 1, 2011 to help him recuperate and hopefully find him a home as well. Once at Chilliwack Kismet was looked at more closely and unfortunately he needed to be shaved as it was the only way his beautiful coat would properly return. It took a few weeks, but soon enough Kismet’s coat was growing back, his weight was closer to where it should be, and he was more loving than anyone would have guessed, given how he came to us.

Kismet was brought to the BC SPCA Vancouver Branch at the end of June through the Drive for Lives program to help him find a suitable home where he could laze about the rest of his days should he so choose. Kismet would take quite a while to warm up to anyone around him, due to his background it was hard for him to trust again. Thankfully a wonderful woman had been searching the BC SPCA adoptable animals online and had found Kismet on there. She came by shortly after and that was it, Kismet had found his forever home. Catherine has been nice enough to send us a fantastic update on how Kismet is progressing and it really is amazing.

I adopted Kismet from the Vancouver branch on August 20th. I saw his profile on-line and as soon as a photo was posted with his cute face, I knew he was for me. I went down as soon as possible to the adoption centre. There were many lovely cats there but he was calling my name. I guess it was kismet after all.

Kismet is doing extremely well. I still can't believe that someone just moved and abandoned him. It took him a few days to come out of hiding as he was so shy. I needed to gain his trust and did so by quietly moving about the house and chatting to him softly. I was told it may take him a week or two to settle in and that is exactly how it was. He would even wait until I left the kitchen to eat. Slowly, he gained confidence and now he is strutting about the house like he owns it. He loves mauling his catnip mice, rolling around on the area carpets, running up and down the stairs and spying out the windows.

For the first couple of weeks he would not get up on any couches or chairs. Then one night I awoke to find him sleeping on the blanket at the end of the bed next to my feet. It made my heart melt. Now he likes to sleep beside my feet every night. In the morning he goes downstairs and brings his catnip mouse up and puts it next to me beside the bed. I was resigned to thinking that he may never be a lap cat. Then after exactly 40 days of being here, out of the blue he jumped up on the couch for the first time and then curled up on my lap. Now he spends most evenings in my lap or curled up right beside me.

He has gained weight and his fur has grown in nicely. He loves a good belly rub. He has stopped clearing his entire dish of food like he doesn't know when his next meal is coming. When I took him in to the Vet for his first check up, she absolutely fell in love with him. He was so good and a real show off! He is such a lovely little guy and I am so incredibly happy to have him.

Thanks ever so much for looking after him and providing a place where people like me can come and adopt a new furry family member. My house now feels like a home again.

All the best,
Catherine

This is a story that truly touches all of our hearts and we just cannot thank Catherine enough for being so understanding of Kismet’s needs and finding the time to do it his way. There would be no better person in our minds to have adopted Kismet and we know he is thinking the exact same thing!
