Aries was a sweet dog when he came into the care of the BC SPCA Victoria Branch in July 2012. He had been used at a puppy mill for years and was finally relinquished into the shelter’s care. Aries needed a lot of help, he was severely matted, requiring dental work, and was clearly not neutered.
He received a less-than-handsome haircut to help alleviate the pain he was surely feeling from all the mats, but even though it wasn’t flattering his lovely personality shone right through.
Soon Aries was also neutered, tattooed, and had made a quick trip to the dentist; he was good as new! Although being in a puppy mill can be quite traumatic, Aries was a trooper, he made sure to let everyone know that he was happy to see them whenever it was time to go for a walk.
It didn’t take long before someone recognized Aries’ great spirit and unwillingness to let the past get him down. His new family has not only brought him in to visit the Victoria branch since adopting, but also has sent us an update on how Aries is coming along.
We were just going to look at the dogs the day we adopted Aries, but ended up falling in love with him. We had recently lost a dear doggy friend, Koko, and were not thinking to really adopt again so soon, but this has certainly helped to fill a massive void.
Aries is not a replacement, but a new bond and connection. He is very sweet and smart. A little 5 pound fluffy thing. He was rescued from a puppy mill where he had been used for breeding and had not much contact with the world, or exercise or training. Including house-training!
In the few weeks since we have had him, he has filled our home with joy and cuteness. He has also come a long way with a little TLC and is now hiking along with us and feeling much more at home, loving the spoiling, the comfy beds, and many treats.
He is quickly getting the hang of things in the house training department and we have had only a few accidents. We are really paying attention to his routines in this area, and also taking him out frequently. It is a bit more work and adjustment, but not a chore as he is so much fun to be with.
I don’t know whether he misses his old friends from the mill. He seems to be forming a strong bond with us very quickly. He has the cutest little bark, and loves looking at thing in the great outdoors.
We took him back to the SPCA for a visit last weekend so they could see how well he was doing. They were very pleased with his progress from a sad little shaved and sore creature (his fur was so matted it had to be shaved almost all off, and he was recovering from dental surgery, and surgery for neutering) to the little bundle of life that he has blossomed into.
Everyone should have such a sweet little dog in their lives, and should consider rescuing a dog or cat at some point.
What a fantastic way for Aries to spend his days; enjoying the company of loved ones, going out for hikes, and having adventures. Although his life may have started off on the wrong foot, Aries is proof an animal’s past does not necessarily define their future. Congratulations to Aries and his new family.
