Animals Matter to Canada
November 12, 2009
Thanks to the support of 75,000 Canadians, the House of Commons has unanimously passed a motion to support the development of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW). The UDAW aims to seek global recognition that animals are capable of feeling pain and suffering, and that they deserve protection.
In 2007, the BC SPCA joined the international "Animals Matter" coalition and has been calling on its supporters to sign the petition ever since. The World Society for the Protection of Animals has been the lead agency on the issue in Canada, successfully coordinating support for the motion from all four Federal political parties.
The UDAW should help pave the way for better animal protection regulations in Canada and throughout the world. To read more about this initiative, please visit www.animalsmatter.org.
Please lend your voice to one of our other campaigns for animals now. Together, we can make a difference.
The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization funded primarily by public donations. Our mission is to prevent cruelty and to promote the welfare of animals through a wide range of services, including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare, spay/neuter programs, and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
