Loonies for Love launches in February to help animals in need

 January 28, 2010

For just a loonie, you can change the life of a homeless animal.

The BC SPCA is launching a month-long, provincewide "Loonies for Love" campaign Feb. 1 to help homeless and neglected animals in local communities.

"The SPCA is a non-profit society that relies almost entirely on donations to provide our services for animals," says Denise Meade, senior manager for special events.  "Even pocket change - like a loonie or two — goes a long way toward meeting the welfare needs of animals in our care."

The SPCA is hoping to raise $10,000 during the Loonies for Love campaign. Specially branded coin boxes will be available at all BC SPCA locations, as well as at some partnering businesses.

As well, visitors who come to local SPCA branches will be able to purchase "loonie hearts" for $1 and have them displayed at the branch for the month.

Money collected at local branches stays in those communities, supporting the SPCA's work in areas ranging from cruelty investigations and emergency rescue to low-cost spay/neuter and cruelty prevention programs. The BC SPCA cares for nearly 37,000 animals a year around the province.

Some BC SPCA branches are also planning special community activities as part of the "Loonies for Love" campaign.

For more information, read our full press release.
