Cupcakes are a sweet treat anytime, but they taste even sweeter when they support animals in need. Beginning Jan. 6, everyone is invited to “bake a difference” through the second annual National Cupcake Day™, taking place Feb. 24, to benefit The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) and additional organizations that provide animal welfare across Canada.
National Cupcake Day™ is the first-ever collaborative fundraising effort supporting animal welfare societies across Canada. It’s easy and delicious to participate:
- Register your participation online at: spca.bc.ca/cupcake;
- Plan a cupcake party at work, home or school;
- Start fundraising by encouraging friends and family to donate online in advance;
- Bake your favourite cupcakes;
- Share them with family and friends and collect donations to prevent cruelty to animals.
All proceeds will support furry friends, big and small, who have been abused or abandoned, or are in need of help. To register or to find more information, please visit spca.bc.ca/cupcake.
Anna Olson, Celebrity Chef and host of Food Network Canada’s Bake with Anna Olson, is joining the party this year as a Cupcake Crusader. A long-time supporter of animals and the SPCA, Olson has created an original cupcake recipe for this year’s event. The recipe, Banana Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting, can be found at www.nationalcupcakeday.ca (nut-free version available online, too).
“Cupcakes are the universal feel-good dessert,” says Olson. “When I discovered that National Cupcake Day™ helps animals, it was the icing on the cupcake.
Whether you make my cupcake recipe or whip up a batch of your own, this is a great chance to feed your body and your soul with a little taste of happiness.”
And in BC, Kristina Matisic, Co-host of Anna and Kristina’s Grocery Bag, is also becoming a Cupcake Champion for the event. “Everyone knows I love chocolate, baking and my dog, Ruby. National Cupcake Day™ is an ideal way to bring them all together in one feel-good activity. As a long-time supporter of The BC SPCA, I invite everyone to whip up a batch of cupcakes and feed your body, your soul and your friends with treats that make a difference!”
The Power of a Cupcake
“The power of a cupcake is unbelievable,” says Kim Monteith, Manager, Animal Welfare, BC SPCA. “We were thrilled with the response in BC last year and can’t wait to get even more bakers and animal lovers involved in National Cupcake Day™ this year. Cupcakes really do make you feel good inside and out, and when they make a life-saving difference in the lives of animals who desperately need our help, they’re even more satisfying.”
The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a not-for-profit organization reliant on public donations. Our mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in B.C.
