WHAT'S HAPPENING

Even animals need angels

The BC SPCA’s new Guardian Angel program allows supporters to help some of the most vulnerable creatures in the society’s care, one special animal at a time.

“The Guardian Angel program is both a personal and meaningful way to make a difference in the lives of homeless, injured and abused animals,” says Kate Salm, senior manager of annual giving.

“It allows supporters to make a connection with one special animal as well as with the dedicated volunteers and staff providing daily care.”

"I don't know what happened to you in your past to make you almost blind and timid, I shudder to think what your life may have been like.

I am just so glad you are in the care of loving people now, and if I could, I would take you in a heartbeat."

Eddie's Guardian Angel, Cathy D. from Westbank B.C.

Becoming a Guardian Angel is easy and rewarding. While making a gift to the BC SPCA online at spca.bc.ca/guardianangel, supporters can select a favourite furry friend from a list of adoptable dogs and cats. Then, the BC SPCA invites Guardian Angels to send a personal message to the staff and volunteers caring for the chosen animal and write some words of encouragement that will be posted on an online adoption profile page for potential adopters to read.

Guardian Angels will also be notified with the good news once the animal is adopted into a new and loving “forever home.”

The Guardian Angel program is designed to appeal to people who are perhaps unable to adopt an animal of their own, but who still want to help care for animals in need and ultimately find them a home.

“The Guardian Angel program is extremely personal,” notes Salm. “Although our donors may not be able to adopt – maybe they are allergic, maybe they can’t have pets where they live or maybe they aren’t quite ready for the responsibility – they can still make a significant difference in the lives of all the animals in our care and to one very special cat or dog, with this unique gift.”
