Our mission: To protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in B.C.

 June 8, 2015

Each year, cat enthusiasts spend millions of hours in front of their computers, tablets and phones watching funny cat internet videos. To celebrate our society’s love of cats and to raise funds and awareness about cat welfare in Canada, the BC SPCA, in partnership with the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and the Vancouver International Film Festival, is bringing the popular Just for Cats film festival to Vancouver on June 28.

The festival, which takes place at the Vancity Theatre at 1181 Seymour Street, will feature five screenings of an exclusive reel of the best internet cat videos compiled by Will Braden of the Walker Art Centre, as well as kitten viewing and adoption counselling, animal-themed merchandise and displays highlighting how people can help make a difference for homeless cats in their community. Ticket sales will support cat welfare programs in B.C. Last year, more than 12,000 people attended Just for Cats film festivals across Canada, raising $60,000 for cat welfare initiatives.

Two special family showings at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. feature a special $5 ticket price for youth 18 and under.  Additional showings are at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. with a VIP viewing at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for students and seniors and $25 for the VIP screening. All viewers must be members of VIFF (tickets and $2 VIFF memberships are available at or at the door).

“Cats are more popular companions than dogs in Canada, with 36 per cent of all households identifying themselves as cat guardians,” says Craig Naherniak, general manager of humane education for the BC SPCA. “On the flip side of that, there is still an overwhelming cat overpopulation crisis in B.C. The festival is a great opportunity to celebrate our love of cats and to make a difference for those who are homeless and suffering.”  He notes that June is cat awareness month across Canada, a perfect time to celebrate our feline friends.
