A Mission woman has been sentenced to three years’ probation and a 15-year ban on keeping animals, following a BC SPCA investigation.

Faye Delores Parkinson, 75, was found guilty of two counts of animal cruelty under the Criminal Code earlier this year after BC SPCA constables seized 18 neglected animals from her property. Eleven Persian and Himalayan cats, five Chihuahua-cross dogs and two Sharpei-mix dogs were found suffering from malnutrition, untreated eye, ear and skin conditions, heavily matted fur caked with feces and urine, dental issues and unsanitary living conditions.

“Our constables have dealt with Ms. Parkinson on several occasions as far back as 2008, leading to previous animal cruelty convictions,” says Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BC SPCA.

“We are extremely happy with this sentence, which will prohibit her from having any involvement with breeding, sales or purchase of animals.” Noting that Parkinson has breached conditions of previous sentences regarding animal bans, Moriarty says she is pleased that the judge also allowed for random inspections of her property with two hours’ notice in the future.

“The sentence handed down demonstrates that the justice system will not tolerate those who profit off the suffering of innocent animals,” says Moriarty.

“Given Ms. Parkinson’s age and the length of the ban we are confident that future risk to animals in her care has been addressed.”

The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a not-for-profit organization reliant on public donations. Our mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in B.C.
