The BC SPCA is thrilled to announce that Rondriso Farms (Surrey, B.C.) recently became SPCA Certified for beef and is the newest farm to join this third-party certification program.
The Tamis family has been farming in Surrey, B.C., since 1958. When Ron and his wife Pam took over the family's beef operation in 2001, they continued the family tradition of raising natural beef for their local community.
"I enjoy all aspects of farming, especially having my boys grow up and learn all different aspects from cropping to animal husbandry," says Ron. "With the SPCA certification, it helps me with my marketing and reaching the customers that appreciate the hard work and cost that goes into raising animals locally in this way, while providing a consistent and superior quality product."
Ron and Pam have always followed humane handling practices and have even eliminated the need for dehorning, a painful practice, by breeding polled livestock – that is, breeds that naturally do not grow horns. Their herd of 40 cattle are born and raised on the farm, free of hormones and steroids as per SPCA Certified standards.
This farm's SPCA Certified beef is available directly from their farm along with their fantastic produce! Beef is sold by the 30 lb family pack or by the quarters or half sides. Selling direct allows the Tamis family to offer all their customers a very unique experience – a chance to get to know local farmers, see their diverse produce in the fields or at their farm stand and (depending on the time of year) enjoy a hay ride through their fabulous pumpkin patch. Rondriso Farms is open from June to October 31.

SPCA Certified is an independent third-party certification system that ensures food products bearing its label comply with the farm animal welfare standards developed by the BC SPCA. So far, nearly 1.8 million farm animals have been raised since the launch of the program in 2002. SPCA Certified products include eggs, cheese, pork, chicken and beef.
