Thieves and vandals hit Surrey shelter twice in as many weeks
March 4, 2010
If rabbits could talk, they might be able to describe the callous crooks who broke into the Surrey SPCA and made off with two old computers and an obsolete 13-inch TV/VCR combo over the weekend.
|
The rabbits were housed inside the Animal Learning Centre, which is adjacent to the main shelter and used for various educational workshops, professional development, training and children's birthday parties.
Some time overnight Sunday, culprits removed a window and kicked in a door to get at the low-tech hardware.
"The computers and the TV have no real value to anyone but us," says Craig Naherniak, general manager of humane education for the BC SPCA. "We used them for our youth programs, to create materials, deliver humane education units and host animal-themed workshops." |

This is the second time in a week the Surrey SPCA has been hit by a break-in.
Someone smashed through a window Feb. 20; nothing was taken, but it cost the shelter $650 to fix the window.
Naherniak says it will cost the not-for-profit society about $2,000 to replace the equipment and repair the damaged door from the latest break-in.
"We didn't budget for a $2,000 expense," says Naherniak. "This will definitely impact our ability to reach a future generation of animal caretakers in Surrey." |
All stolen pieces of equipment had "SPCA" written on them. If anyone has any information about the break-in, please contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
Your gift will help the BC SPCA continue to educate children about kindness to animals and animal welfare, ensuring that future generations will be able to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. Help the BC SPCA's Monty Fund for Community Education & Outreach. Donate today.
