Poached eggs on artichoke bottoms with white truffle cream …
a creamy block of steaming, baked brie with savoury crackers … braised chicken with chestnuts and ginger…
You can be naughty at the table but nice in the kitchen this holiday season, thanks to the SPCA Certified food products.
From the holiday ham or turkey to the eggs in homemade eggnog, dinner-table fare that features products under the SPCA Certified label are both tasty and humane.
“For a lot of people, one of the great things about holiday celebrations is the food,” says Alyssa Bell Stoneman, who supervises the SPCA Certified labelling program. “This year, consider the food we consume and put animal welfare at the top of your grocery list by buying SPCA Certified products.”
SPCA Certified products are available across B.C. and Alberta. Certified turkeys can be ordered from:
• First Nature Farms (Alberta) • Happy Chick Farm (Sunshine Coast) • Ladybug Manor (Fraser Valley) • Sunworks Farm (Alberta)
Place your orders through the farms’ websites or visit our retail page for stores near you.
To learn more about the SPCA Certified program go online and watch the video series which introduces you to some of our farmers and describes how the program works to improve farm animal welfare.
About SPCA Certified: SPCA Certified is a farm and food certification program that brings stakeholders together to further common goals in farm animal welfare.
Products come from farms annually assessed to BC SPCA farm animal welfare standards by trained inspectors, with certification determined by third party, independent reviewers. SPCA Certified and certified organic farms are the only farming operations independently inspected for animal welfare practices by made-in-Canada programs.
The animal welfare standards incorporate current research in animal welfare science with practical protocols, as developed by an expert panel of animal welfare scientists, veterinarians, and farmers in consultation with the BC SPCA. Third-party certified farmers build their market share by branding their products for consumers with the red barn logo and communicating their innovative practices to the public.
Consumers can find a list of retailers and on-farm sales online that offer SPCA Certified products.
The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization funded primarily by public donations. Our mission is to prevent cruelty and to promote the welfare of animals through a wide range of services, including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare, spay/neuter programs, and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
