Dog-park complaints result in charge of animal cruelty
December 4, 2009
A Victoria man who took his dog to a local dog park with an untreated injury has been charged with animal cruelty.
Sydney James Haskell brought Cosmos, a pit bull/Labrador mix, to the park one day last month, where park users noticed a large gaping wound on Cosmos' leg and made complaints to the BC SPCA about Cosmos' condition.
Haskell was ordered to seek veterinary care for Cosmos, but the dog was instead surrendered to the BC SPCA's Victoria shelter.
BC SPCA special provincial constable Erika Paul, who investigated the case, applauds the other dog guardians at the park for reporting Cosmos' condition to the BC SPCA.
"These people saw an animal suffering and decided not to tolerate it and for that they should be congratulated," she said.
The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization funded primarily by public donations. Our mission is to prevent cruelty and to promote the welfare of animals through a wide range of services, including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare, spay/neuter programs, and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
