Our mission: To protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in B.C.

John and Janet Pattinson

Generosity in Action - April 2014

When John and Janet Pattinson started volunteering at the BC SPCA Shuswap Branch in 2002, it came from their desire to help local animals. The sight of stray and unwanted animals in their community broke the hearts of these two animal lovers and they wanted to do what they could to stop the suffering.

John volunteers twice weekly cleaning dog kennels, while Janet has held numerous positions on the Branch’s Community Council, including President and Vice-President. Both have also been instrumental in supporting the Branch’s fundraising initiatives. John manages the donation can program as well as making weekly trips to the recycling depot as part of the ongoing local bottle drive. Janet has coordinated the local Scotiabank and BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk for more than a decade, and has been the event’s top fundraiser in B.C. for the last three years. In addition to this extraordinary volunteer support, the Pattinson’s unwavering philanthropic dedication has been critical to the shelter’s operation. “Janet and John are remarkable donors and volunteers and are very important to the Branch,” enthused Tracy Westmoreland, the BC SPCA regional manager of the Interior. “Their unwavering dedication is a real inspiration.”

It may have been stray dogs and cats that first inspired Janet and John to get involved, but today humane education and advocacy are their passions. “Over the years we have seen how important the big picture is, and how much more we can do by working collaboratively,” says Janet. “Education is the key to preventing abuse and neglect.”

In honour of Volunteer Appreciation Week this April, we are so proud to celebrate Janet and John as our Donors of the Month. We encourage branches to name homeless animals "Chester" this month in memory of John's first dog after moving to Canada.

Janet is pictured with their dogs Catherine and Charlotte, both adopted from the Shuswap SPCA, Tiffany, who was a rescue adopted from their veterinarian, and the late, beloved Ceiri.
