Each spring, animals are faced with an unneccesary danger: cosmetic pesticides.
These chemicals are used to control unwanted weeds and plants for a more attractive appearance. Some B.C. municipalities have already established by-laws to ban the use of these products. The World Health Organization and US Environmental Protection Agency have published studies regarding the carcinogenicity of pesticides and the related risk of cancer.
The BC SPCA has joined the Canadian Cancer Society in a campaign, partnered with Toxic Free Canada to promote a ban on cosmetic pesticides in British Columbia.
A proposed bill would include a ban on the use of cosmetic pesticides on all sports fields and golf courses, stronger by-laws for municipalities and the establishment of a public education campaign with a list of low-risk alternative products.
