WHAT'S HAPPENING

I have a pet, and we need a home...

The BC SPCA believes that if landlords were aware of the significant benefits of pet-friendly housing, they would be more inclined to offer it.

One of the biggest direct advantages of offering pet-friendly housing is increased rental income, since people with pets will pay 20 to 30 per cent more for housing. People with pets also stay longer -- an average of 46 months, compared to 18 months for people without pets -- saving landlords from having to spend time advertising for, finding and screening new reliable tenants.

Other direct benefits include increased security, as pet guardians are the eyes and ears around the complex during late-night and early- morning walks with Fido. And Fido also stays behind to protect the place when his master isn't home. Companion animals have even greater benefits to society at large. They assist children with the development of language skills, empathy, responsibility and self-esteem.

Studies have also shown that companion animals help reduce feelings of loneliness, anxiety and stress.

Living in harmony...

The BC SPCA recognizes both the need for pet-friendly housing, and for responsible tenants who do not abuse the privilege of having pets in their homes. We have created a toolkit to help tenants prepare to find a new home, discuss options with current or new landlords and to better understand this issue.

This rental toolkit includes:
