About Painted River Farm

The Gilmore family (Donna, Wes and their family) have actively farmed on Barnston Island for 40 years. A unique setting for a farm, the 1500 acre island is located in the Fraser River between Surrey and Pitt Meadows.

Their cattle are born and raised on the Island, free of hormones, implants or steroids, as per B.C. SPCA Standards.  There are no herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers used on their land either.  The cattle eat home-grown hay and silage, and grains purchased that are free of any animal byproducts.  "We raise our animals in the most natural way possible," says Donna, "The whole family works together to produce the best beef for our family, friends and customers."

Transportation times are minimal (1 hour) and handling practices take animal behaviour into account, resulting in low stress and ease of movement.

Painted River Farm actively participates in other on-farm planning programs as well. In 2007 they were certified with the Verified Beef Program through the B.C. Cattlemen's Association.

Product availability

Painted River sells their products at the farmgate by pre-orders (see contact information below). 

Products are currently available as:  30 or 60 lb freezer packs; custom cutting by 1/2 side (360 lb) or 1/4 side (155 lb); and custom orders on request.  View sample freezer pack information.
