WHAT'S HAPPENING

Vale Farms Grassroots Ltd.

Lumby, B.C.

SPCA Certified beef (since 2005) and sheep (since 2011).

SPCA Certified is an innovative farm certification and food-labelling program dedicated to improving farm animal welfare standards in Canada.

About Vale Farms Grassroots Ltd.

Vale Farms was started in 1975 by Michael and Charlotte Ruechel, who immigrated to Canada from Germany. Today, Charlotte, her daughter Emily and her son-in-law, Don Hladych, and their three daughters, are continuing the farming tradition.

The farm transitioned into organic in 1999 and started direct-marketing their 100% grass-fed beef at farmers' markets, stores and restaurants. A grass-fed sheep flock was added to the beef operation in 2005.  "We believe that the key to high quality meat is high quality pastures", states Charlotte Ruechel.  "Our animals are grass-finished and raised to organic standards."

Vale Farms' animals are also free from added growth hormones, animal by-products, antibiotics, grain, GMO feeds, pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers.

"Humane animal husbandry practices are very important to our family farm, so we use low-stress livestock handling techniques, as well as spring and summer calving and lambing." says Charlotte.

"Our mission is to promote strong and healthy families and to provide our community with a choice of nutritious quality farm products while cultivating the holistic balance between land, animals and people. Environmental projects, community support and nutrition advocacy are some of the things that are important to us.  Farming is not just our business, it's our passion and our way of life. Providing our customers with food products that we are proud of inspires us, our children and hopefully generations of new farmers to come." says Charlotte of Vale Farms.

Vale Farms' products include a wide selection of beef and lamb cuts, as well as Sea Buckthorn berry juice and Yugoslavian racombole garlic.  Beef and sheep products are SPCA Certified, certified organic, provincially inspected, fresh, frozen and available year-round.
