About Windhorse Farm

Laurice and Tim Mock, owners and operators of Windhorse Farm, have been farming in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island since 2007.  In addition to SPCA certification, Windhorse Farm is Certified Organic to the Islands Organic Producers Association (IOPA) Standards and the Canadian Organic regime, and is also certified (and audited) under the Verified Beef Production program. The cattle at Windhorse Farm are 100% grass fed and grass finished.

"We operate organically and to BC SPCA farm animal welfare standards because we want to ensure the animals, the land and the greater farm environment are cared for in the healthiest, most natural way possible," says Laurice. "All of our practices – be it weaning, handling or health care – are done with the animal in mind.”

“At Windhorse, we use a grazing technique called Managed Intensive Grazing (MiG) techniques, hot composting of approximately 60 tonnes of farm waste, together with the making and spraying of fungal-rich compost teas as key management tools to ensure we give back to the soil as much as we can. We believe that healthy soils and soil biology are the foundation of a healthy grazing operation. It’s one of nature’s sweet win-wins for the cattle, for the farm environment and for the farm business. The wild critters seem to thrive on it too."
