WHAT'S HAPPENING

SPCA Certified is an innovative farm certification and food-labelling program dedicated to improving farm animal welfare standards in Canada.

In response to growing concern for farm animal welfare, the BC SPCA developed SPCA Certified – the consumer's assurance that farm animals are raised to the BC SPCA's high animal welfare standards.

Certification requirements

The integrity of the certification program includes:

  • Annual and random farm inspections by third party, professional validators;

  • Independent, expert review panel determines farm certification status;

  • Formulation of standards by specialists in animal welfare and behaviour;

Each species-specific standard is based on the internationally recognized Five Freedoms of animal welfare. The standards are dynamic, scientific and evidence-based – addressing key farm animal welfare concerns that consumers want answered.

SPCA Certified goals

  • Facilitate and support evidence-based improvements to farm animal welfare standards

  • Provide voluntary, third-party animal welfare certification services to the animal agriculture industry

  • Provide consumers with an assurance that animals from certified farms were raised according to high animal welfare standards and have not been fed mammalian or avian proteins.
