The SPCA Certified program is an independent, third party animal welfare certification system. SPCA Certified brings stakeholders together to further common goals in farm animal welfare.

Products come from farms which are annually assessed to SPCA Certified farm animal welfare standards and operation policies by trained, independent inspectors. Certification is determined by third party, independent review panellists.

Certification requirements

The integrity of the certification program includes:

  • Annual and random farm inspections by third party, professional validators

  • Independent, expert review panel determines farm certification status

  • Formulation of standards by specialists in animal welfare and behaviour

Each species-specific standard is based on the internationally recognized Five Freedoms of animal welfare. The standards are dynamic, scientific and evidence-based, addressing key farm animal welfare concerns that consumers want answered.

SPCA Certified goals

  • Provide voluntary, third-party animal welfare certification services to the animal agriculture industry

  • Provide consumers with a third-party assurance that animals from certified farms were raised according to high animal welfare standards

  • Facilitate and support evidence-based improvements to farm animal welfare standards
