A young sharp-shinned hawk must have been rescued by a guardian angel in November 2011. Her significant injuries sustained from flying into a window appeared to be critical at first, but almost a month later she made a miraculous recovery and was released to fly home.

Although Wild ARC sees many owls throughout the year, most are adults or older juveniles. This year however - two young Barred Owls - still of nesting age, were brought into care a week apart in June 2011. Their five month journey in care involved learning how to fly and hunt before they were released together on November 25.

After almost two years in care with specialized training, a young red-tailed hawk was finally scheduled for release - but she decided to leave early on her own just days before... But thankfully months later - with a recent report this week - we hear of her successful hunting escapades in the area.

A new and innovative film festival showcasing local wildlife-inspired short films and documentaries, The Paws and Claws Film Festival, presented by the BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre, (Wild ARC) debuts today. Films can be viewed online and viewers can vote for their favourite film now through November 4.
